As a matter of interest, does anybody know when these badges first appeared on the cars?

Mine was first registered early December 1965 without one. Boo hoo.

I knew quite a few blokes with LC's back in the day & never saw a car earlier than mine with one.

I knew a few who added the badge later. It was a nice touch.

What was the date that the race took place.
How long would it then have taken for Chapman to put the Rootes group bezel with a badge he had made then put it on his production cars

Bruce - That bezel was a generic Rootes bezel used on quite a few cars at the time (Imp, Tiger, Alpine etc) also the non-Indianapolis inserts were used by Lotus on other cars - World Champions 1963.

The race took place on 31st May 1965.

Lotus had a similar occurrence following Jim Clark's death in April 1967. Black badges were fitted to cars as a mark of respect to the great man but they didn't appear 'till April 1968.

I did speak to a noted Lotus historian about the Indy badges some years ago & he did confirm that they did not appear on LC's 'till early 1966.

Hi David
That's about when I thought they appeared.
Thanks Keith
These are a little cheaper than some of the eBay entry's.
I only remember the bezel on Rootes cars and the L C

My July 1965 car had the Indianapolis centre console badge fitted, so I'm not sure where the "noted LC guru" got his information from.
There was a series of posts on this subject back in 2007.

The 'Noted LOTUS historian' (not LC), as I recall, got his information from a Lotus employee who actually fitted the badges. It's called research. 'course he could have been lying! Another thing I recall is that once they started fitting them, ALL cars had them. There was no question of the odd car not having one because the bucket of badges ran dry. It seemed that Chapman was very strict about quality control.

I did know of several people adding the badges to their earlier cars back in the sixties so I'm not surprised if they still have them today. I must say that if my car had had one fitted when I bought it I would assume, with what I know now, that it was a later addition. Would I remove it? Maybe, maybe not.

I personally don't believe any cars left the factory prior to very late December 1965 with an Indy badge fitted. I don't have a problem with people fitting them, I think they look very nice. All I know for sure is that my car was first registered on 2nd Dec 1965 without one so that's how it will stay.

My God, I'm turning picky. Where's me shot gun?

........and I thought I was picky. I'm just an amateur. I expect the fairies fitted the badge to my car.
